RES forms Junior Beta Club
Rincon Elementary School has established a new Junior Beta Club chapter. It consists of fifth grade students who have met the set criteria for becoming members. The new members have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, exemplified worthy character, and maintained a commendable attitude throughout the first semester of the 2010-11 school term.

School system completes screenings for pre-k students
The Effingham County School System recently completed vision, dental and hearing screenings on each of its 480 pre-k students in preparation for their transition to kindergarten next fall.
Guyton elementary Family Night
Guyton Elementary enjoyed a fun night with students and their families on Feb. 10. The theme was "Put Your Heart into Learning."
GES, Chick-fil-A teaming up
On Monday, Effingham County's Guyton Elementary and Chick-fil-A will be teaming up to raise money for Relay for Life and to enjoy a Read Across America night with students and parents.
Waxing historic
Springfield Elementary fourth-graders held their annual wax museum, where students stood frozen in time until visitors stepped in front of them. They students explained the historic significance of their characters.
BoE moves district lines
With newest member Mose Mock as the lone dissenter, the Effingham Board of Education approved a recommendation to adjust middle school district lines at its Feb. 17 meeting held at Effingham County Middle School, where a majority of the students impacted will attend in the fall.
RES parent of the month
Betty Milton was awarded as the February parent of the month by Rincon Elementary School for her involvement and dedication to her nephew's education and special needs.
Celebrating Georgia Day
The United Daughters of the Confederacy, Effingham County Hussars, Chapter No. 2285, presented its annual Georgia Day program to Guyton Elementary School fifth graders.
Miss EMS crowned
Lauren Morgan, an eighth grader at Ebenezer Middle School, was crowned as Miss EMS 2011 in the pageant held recently at the school.
Three from SEHS FBLA earn firsts at region competition
South Effingham High FBLA members participated in the recent Region Competition held in Jesup, with three of them earning first place finishes.
Presbyterian College honors Fowler
CLINTON, S.C.- Caitlin Ryan Fowler, a junior early childhood education major from Guyton, was named to the Dean's List at Presbyterian College for maintaining at least a 3.5 grade point average for the Fall 2010 semester:

Hanna Schoen, a rising senior at South Effingham High School, has been selected to represent Georgia as a National Youth Delegate to the 2011 Washington Youth Summit on the Environment at George Mason University.
Springfield Elementary to hold ‘Wax Museum’
Fourth graders at Springfield Elementary will become frozen in time, so to speak, on Friday, when they pose as figures in a wax museum representing the historical characters they have spent several weeks researching.

Beck earns appointment to Air Force Academy
U.S. Rep. John Barrow (D-Savannah) has congratulated four students from the 12th District for having been appointed to the nation's military academies for the class of 2015, including Courtney Anne Beck of Guyton. Each student received a nomination from Barrow.
Retired Educators hand out honors
The Effingham County Retired Educators held their annual banquet recently at New Ebenezer Retreat Center. New officers were installed. They are Patsy Zeigler, vice president; Barbara Strickland, president; Faye Zeigler, secretary; and Carolyn Kessler, treasurer.
New officers for SEMS FFA
The South Effingham Middle School FFA chapter held its annual banquet May 21. During the banquet students who participated in career development events, exhibited livestock and those who earned their Discovery Degree were recognized and presented certificates during the ceremony.
Hilton named to dean’s list at Young Harris College
Young Harris College President Cathy Cox is pleased to announce that Victoria Diane Hilton has been named to the Young Harris College dean's list for the Spring 2011 semester. Students who achieve a 3.5 grade point average or better are eligible to be named to the dean's list.
Getting down to business
Business, education and community leaders throughout the county joined forces at Effingham Career Academy Tuesday morning to discuss how to prepare Effingham students for the 21st Century workforce.
Test scores getting top marks
As a whole, the Effingham County School System saw gains as scores came in for the Grade 5 Writing Assessment and the Georgia High School Graduation Test, as well as unofficial scores the Georgia Criterion Reference Competency Test.
Library summer reading program is now ongoing
The 2011 Summer Reading Program is under way at both Effingham branches of Live Oak Public Libraries through Aug. 19. This year's theme is "One World, Many Stories." The annual program is for ages 0 to 18 and helps maintain or increase reading levels over the long school break.
4-H team shoots for the top
Accompanied by six members of the certified volunteer coaching staff, 19 qualifying Junior and Senior competitors advanced to compete at the State Target Challenge match held in May.
School board may ponder slight millage hike
Assistant Superintendent Gregg Arnsdorff finished a promising moments presentation earlier at the Effingham County Board of Education's meeting Wednesday on the most recent official and unofficial test scores, most of which saw impressive gains this year.
