Library summer reading program is now ongoing
The 2011 Summer Reading Program is under way at both Effingham branches of Live Oak Public Libraries through Aug. 19. This year's theme is "One World, Many Stories." The annual program is for ages 0 to 18 and helps maintain or increase reading levels over the long school break.

TSCG rescinds hike in GED test fees
ATLANTA-The state board that oversees the Technical College System of Georgia and its Office of Adult Education (OAE) has voted to rescind a planned increase in the GED test fees for Georgia's adult learners. The TCSG will wait until at least early next year to reconsider the cost.

A grand day for grads: ECHS
It was standing room only at Rebel Field on a sunny, warm Saturday evening as nearly 410 young men and women became the newest alumni of Effingham County HIgh School. Each member of the class carried a balloon to their seat, and many wrote personal messages on their balloons to commemorate three classmates who were killed in separate auto accidents.
A grand day for grads: SEHS
Family and friends were not deterred by the dark purple clouds rolling over The Corral on Friday evening. They packed the stands and crowded the fences around the field to watch 353 Mustangs receive their South Effingham High School diplomas. Luckily, only a few drops of rain were felt, and the clouds rolled on as SEHS chorus teacher Ray Ellis called each of the graduates to step across the stage.
School lunches to cost a nickel more
Effingham County school lunch prices will increase five cents next year in compliance with a federally mandated provision for school systems nationwide.

ECHS senior recognized as GPB Academic All-Star Athlete
Effingham County High School senior Emily Woods, the daughter of Jim and Lisa Woods of Springfield, has been honored by Georgia Public Broadcasting as a 2010-11 Academic All-Star Athlete. Woods was nominated by ECHS Principal Yancy Ford, who presented her with a plaque at class night. The school also received a plaque, which will be placed in the ECHS trophy case.
