Mercer University inducts two locals into honor society

MACON-The following area students were recently inducted into the Mercer University chapter of Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society, a first-year student honor society.
Sophomore Rebecca Callaway, of Rincon. Callaway is a student in the university's College of Liberal Arts.

ECHS takes fourth at SkillsUSA

Members of Effingham County High School's SkillsUSA chapter competed and took home several prizes and an overall fourth place ranking at the first SkillsUSA Champions Rally at the Georgia National Fairgrounds in Perry. Close to 900 members and advisors from 50 schools across Georgia joined together in Reaves Arena for a day of motivation and competition.
Christina Hillman, a senior at ECHS, represented Effingham County as the SkillsUSA state president. The keynote speaker was Keith Brown, who did an exceptional job capturing the audience's attention and including many members of the audience in his presentation.

ECHS to host annual PROBE Fair

The annual PROBE College Fair will be held at Effingham County High School on Oct. 26 from 6-7:30 p.m. in the ECHS lunchroom. ECHS and South
Effingham High School juniors and seniors, along with their parents, are invited to attend and explore their many options for post-secondary education.
College representatives will be available to discuss specific admission requirements, scholarships, campus life, financial aid, housing, etc. Contact your high school counselor's office for more information.

STC to hold info session for commercial truck driving

SAVANNAH-Savannah Technical College will host two information sessions for those interested in becoming commercial truck drivers today at 2 and 6 p.m. in Room 148 at the Liberty Campus, 100 Technology Drive in Hinesville.
The session will include admission and financial aid information, entry testing and give prospective students an opportunity to have their questions answered in advance of class beginning Oct. 25. To begin the admission process, students need to bring a photo ID. There is a $20 application fee.
The CDL program is covered by the HOPE grant for eligible students.

Faculty and staff at Springfield Elementary School hosted a jeans day in order to raise money for the Susan G. Komen breast cancer awareness fund. The school was able to raise over $500 to support the cause.

Discovering Columbus Day

Blandford Elementary kindergarten classes celebrated Columbus Day with many fun events.
Students brought in boats made at home for a school wide boat parade. Classes also held Ivory Soap boat races and enjoyed Coke floats.
Hunter Street of Ms. Rahn's class was the winner of the grade level boat races.

Schools to hold flu vaccine clinics

For the second consecutive year, the Effingham County Board of Education and the Effingham County Health Department are partnering to bring flu vaccine to students in grades Pre-k through 12. The CDC has requested school vaccine clinics at each school for students in order to increase participation and protection.
Parental permission forms for student vaccine, as well as a cover letter from Dr. Skelton, medical director of Chatham-Effingham County Health Departments, are being sent home with students. Permission forms are due back to the school nurse by Oct. 20. Flu clinics will begin the first week of November.

Marching Mustangs take Coastal Empire Classic

The beat was on at the 29th annual Coastal Empire Classic marching band competition held at Rebel Field on Saturday, with performers and spectators packing the stands.
Including Effingham County High School Rebel Regiment's exhibition performance, more than 1,200 students in 11 bands from all over Georgia performed at this year's contest.

School system to host resource fair

The Effingham County School System and the Bulloch Team of Right From the Start Medicaid Project are hosting the first Harvest Community Resource Fair in the Lowe's parking lot on Oct. 30 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
Families are encouraged to attend and learn about local resources including food pantries, free school uniforms, employment support for individuals with disabilities, respite care, mental health assistance, healthcare, pregnancy care and much more.

South Effingham High School Mustang Cheerleaders, coached by Kim Fritts and Kim Morgan, participated in the East Laurens High School Falcon Frenzy on Oct. 9, where they placed first in their division and won the People's Choice award. Fields of Faith

Hundreds of students came to Effingham County High School last Wednesday as part of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes' "Fields of Faith" event. "Fields of Faith" is structured as a student-to-student ministry. A "Fields of Faith" is held in each one of the three counties, Effingham, Bryan and Chatham, represented by the Coastal chapter of the FCA. Ed Pulkinen is the area director for FCA.
