When the members of the Springfield Elementary School junior Beta Club sponsored a coin collection to benefit the earthquake victims in Haiti, they knew it was a good thing to do, but they probably didn't really know how their money would be spent.
ECHS student Brittany McCrae won the silver medal in the Interview category and Karlie Persutti placed in the top 12 five times for the seven events in which she participated at the Georgia Academic Decathlon 2010 state competition.
Students in the Effingham County School System will have a chance to learn a bit more about agriculture in the state as a result of a gift from the Effingham County Farm Bureau in the form of a DVD and poster for each school.
When state legislators asked the 35 public universities to prepare for more than an additional $300 million in cuts, they were not expecting those cuts to be inimical to some of their constituents' most beloved programs, such as 4-H.
A worst-case scenario could reduce state funding to Georgia Southern University by 30 percent, which GSU president Dr. Brooks Keel said "will have a major impact on Georgia Southern and would require significant operational changes at our university."
