Local teens receive award for activism

The Savannah-Area Teen Age Republican Club received national recognition July 23 as the most outstanding new TARS club in the nation. Chartered on March 24, the club is 14 members strong and leads the area's conservative youth movement.
Teens from Effingham, Liberty, Bryan, and Chatham counties participate in the group. David Twibell and Katie Twibell of Rincon are the club's two newest members. The club wishes to thank Mrs. Laurie Twibell for her help with the scrapbook.

School council members to be elected this month

The General Assembly requires that all public school systems in Georgia have school councils in place for the purposes of bringing communities and schools closer together in a spirit of cooperation to solve difficult education problems, improve academic achievement, provide support for teachers and administrators, and bring parents into the school-based decision-making process. All Effingham County Schools will hold elections for the upcoming year. Elections will be held to fill expiring terms, new terms and vacancies in unexpired terms.

STC gets the keys to a Kia

WEST POINT-Dr. Kathy S. Love received a Kia "key to the future" during a special event held Wednesday at the Kia Georgia Training Center in West Point, when Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia Inc. (KMMG) donated 20 of the all-new Kia Sorentos to the Technical College System of Georgia. The colleges receiving the cars were chosen based on the size of enrollment in their automotive programs.

System earns national accreditation

School Superintendent Randy Shearouse announced that the Effingham County School System was granted District Accreditation from the AdvancED Accreditation Commission, the national commission that confers the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement (SACS CASI) accreditation seal.
This means that the district and all of its schools are accredited, and that the Effingham County School System is recognized across the nation as a quality school system.

Yearbook staff molds top honors at camp

Members of the ECHS Rebel Yearbook staff traveled to Collins Hill High School from July 20-22 for Walsworth Yearbook Camp.
The ECHS Rebel Yearbook won third place in theme and cover design.
Holly Nance won second place in online design. Staffers placed among the top three copy writing stories during an interview and story writing exercise.

Ogletree named to dean’s list at UGA

ATHENS-The University of Georgia has announced that Samantha G. Ogletree of Guyton has been named to the Dean's List for the spring 2010 semester.
Students named to the Dean's List have earned a 3.5 grade point average or higher out of a possible 4.0.
Dean's List designation requires that students take at least 14 credit hours and receive no unsatisfactory or incomplete grades.

State’s technical colleges set enrollment record

ATLANTA-An unprecedented 22 percent jump in the number of students attending the state's technical colleges has set a new annual enrollment record for the Technical College System of Georgia. The system's 26 colleges enrolled 190,842 students in fiscal year 2010, which ended on June 30. The total smashes the previous record high enrollment set in 2009 by more than 34,000 students.
At Savannah Technical College, total enrollment was up 13 percent from the previous year, with the college serving 9,639 students in 2009-10 up from 8,531 in 2008-09.
