A ‘writing wonderland’ at RES

On Jan. 13, a large audience of students and parents participated in a Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) event at Rincon Elementary School. RIF was sponsored by Effingham County Even Start Literacy and Rincon Elementary School. County pre-k students, Headstart students, and students from Kathy's Day Care and Even Start families were invited to attend the event. Also, all students from RES, the host school, were invited to participate.

Teachers trying to stem dropout rates

Effingham County high school teachers participated Jan. 3 in a workshop at the Effingham Career Academy presented by Robert Lynn Canady, professor emeritus, University of Virginia. Schools to open two hours late

Effingham County schools will be opening two hours late on Tuesday. Buses will pick up students two hours later than usual and students and staff will report two hours late. School will let out at the normal time.

Snow day!

Monday's weather was anything but delightful, and Marlow Elementary rewarded students who reached their semester Accelerated Reader goals with a snow day last week. Sea Gardens Seafood came from Darien to spout the shaved ice in front of the school. Classes and grades took turns throughout the day on the snow knoll, making snow angels, building tiny snowmen and having snowball battles with each other and their teachers.

Effingham BoE adopts state ethics policy

Tax revenue rolls in for school system

Strong late 2010 property tax collections gave the Effingham County Board of Education breathing room and then some. "December was a very strong month for collections," said Ron Wilson, financial director for the Effingham school district. The drive to give

During the weeks of Dec. 4 and 11 both the FBLA and the Beta Club collected canned food for local food banks. The clubs involved all the classes at Effingham County High School in this worthwhile project.
