The following students from Effingham County received degrees from the University of Georgia at the end of the fall 2010 semester. Commencement exercises were held Dec. 17, 2010, at the University of Georgia.

Under a spell

Career Academy looks to catch Ford PAS
ATLANTA-Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle has announced that the Effingham Career Academy will be receiving a $10,000 grant to support its efforts to become a Ford PAS Next Generation Learning Community. The announcement was made during Effingham Day at the State Capitol, sponsored by the Effingham County Chamber of Commerce.
ECHS to host ‘Apply to College Week’
Effingham County High School counselors and media specialists will be hosting their first "Apply to College Week," Jan. 31-Feb. 4. The goal for this event is to provide all Effingham County High School seniors the opportunity to submit at least one application for college admission and someone to assist them as needed to complete the process.
School system set to take pre-k applications
Pre-kindergarten applications for the 2011-12 school year will be available on Feb. 1. You may pick up an application from any of the schools, the Effingham County Board of Education Office (and on the Board's Web site www.effinghamschools.com), the Effingham County Health Department or from the Department of Family and Children Services in Springfield.
ECHS teacher of the month
The student nominated ECHS Teacher of the Month for December is Wes Perkins. His students praised Perkins for being an exceptional individual, reliable, able to relate to them and a wonderful music teacher.
100 days of school
The pre-k class at Little Tots celebrated its 100th day of school on Jan. 21. The children were asked to bring in 100 items from home to share with the class and they took part in activities that placed emphasis on 100.

Special needs student from across the county competed in the annual Special Olympics Friday at Effingham County High School.
School system looks at middle school shift
The Effingham County Board of Education is currently reviewing a recommendation to redistrict the middle school population at Ebenezer Middle School.

Anna Freeman wins Infinity Ring grand prize
Blandford Elementary School fifth-grade student Anna Freeman has been named the grand prize winner of Scholastic Book Club's Infinity Ring Rewrite History Contest. Freeman's essay was selected from the nearly 3,000 entries from across the country. As a result, James Dashner, author of "Infinity Ring," will be visiting Blandford Elementary and speaking with the fifth-grade classes.

The Effingham County High FFA agricultural mechanics team won the Area IV FFA Agricultural Mechanics Career Development Event, held at Treutlen County High School in Soperton on Jan. 8.
Pre-K application process to begin soon
Parents who want to apply for their children to attend pre-kindergarten in Effingham County may pick up registration packets beginning on Feb. 19. Completed pre-K application packets must be turned in between Feb. 19-March 8, to the elementary school for which the family is zoned.
AASU to hold health careers summer camp
Armstrong Atlantic State University's College of Health Professions announces its inaugural college health careers summer camp scheduled for July 21-27. The camp is for rising high school juniors and seniors who are interested in a career in health care.

GSU again named ‘military-friendly school’
Georgia Southern University has been named a military-friendly school for the second year in a row by Military Advanced Education in its 2013 Guide to Military-Friendly Colleges and Universities. The list appears in the December issue of the magazine.

Effingham County High School's Cal Baker and Aby Youmans and South Effingham High School's Hannah Anderson have been recognized for their academic and athletic accomplishments, as their schools' 2012 winners of the Wendy's High School Heisman Award.
Writing scores on par with state marks
High school students in Effingham County are passing the Georgia High School Writing Test at a comparable rate to others statewide, but school officials are looking at ways to make the numbers better.
4-H Cloverleafs get creative in new art club
Art and creativity are a large part of the 4-H program, with its many competitive events and crafty presentations. Students learn the importance of possessing some level of creativity, if they are going to place in competitions. The Effingham County Extension Office is proud to host the new 4-H Art Club, conducted by program assistant Jessica Dasher.
