An Effingham County teenager was killed Tuesday when the all-terrain vehicle he was a passenger on turned over.

Terrence Christopher Suggs was the passenger on a John Deere “Gator” when the vehicle apparently overturned on top of him. Suggs was one of two juveniles on the ATV, which was on private property off Highway 17 at the time of the accident.

Suggs was a student at South Effingham Middle School.

The driver of the ATV was not seriously injured in the accident, according to Effingham County Sheriff’s Office Detective David Ehsanipoor.

Suggs’ body has been sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation crime lab for an autopsy.

The ECSO is investigating the incident.

“At this time, it appears that this was a tragic accident,” Ehsanipoor said in a release. “The Effingham County Sheriff’s Office reminds everyone, especially children, how important it is to use safety equipment when riding ATVs such as seat belts and helmets. We encourage parents to supervise all minors who are riding on ATVs.”
