A downburst brought down trees and power lines and damaged porches in Clyo early Saturday morning, according to the National Weather Service office in Charleston, S.C.

Jonathan Lamb of the NWS said the downburst occurred at approximately 3:08 a.m. in the area of Tuckasee King Road, King Boulevard and Morgan Cemetery Road.

A downburst is the gusty winds produced by thunderstorms.

“The reason it’s called a downburst is because the wind goes straight down from the storm, and then when it hits the ground, it spreads out horizontally and blows down trees and produces damage,” he said.
