Local hero Winston Hencely returns home

POSTED: April 19, 2017 11:13 a.m.

American flags waved through the air Saturday morning along Highway 21 as local hero, Winston Hencely, made his way back home to Effingham County.

Hencely, who has been recovering both overseas and in the United States from injuries sustained in Afghanistan, finally made his way back home.

“Welcome Home Winston” signs were held by dozens of people while Winston and his family were escorted through the impromptu celebration route. More than 100 people lined the highway Saturday, with many others showing their support in other ways.

Utility poles were decorated with yellow ribbons around them in support.

Before the Hencely’s made their way through Rincon, Winston was able to meet members of his family at the Welcome Center off I-95 - for many, it was their first time seeing Winston in almost a year.

Hencely will not be home permanently as he will undergo another surgery in May. Once the surgery is complete, he wishes to be transferred to Fort Stewart.

Numerous local groups have begun planning fundraisers for the Hencely family, including Winston’s Warriors, Coastal Georgia Body Car Club and Advance Auto Parts and Sun Kissed Tanning, among others.

On Tuesday night, the Effingham County Board of Commissioners approved a motion to proclaim May 6, 2017 as US Army Specialist Winston Hencely Day in Effingham County.

More information on Hencely’s rehabilitation and information on fundraisers to come in the weeks ahead.
