Effingham County Hussars hold Annual Confederate Memorial Day service

POSTED: June 15, 2017 4:41 p.m.

The Effingham County Hussars Chapter No. 2285 welcomed friends and guests recently for their annual Confederate Memorial Day Service to honor those who fought and served valiantly for a cause dear to them.

The event was held at Courthouse Square, where Boy Scout Troop 665 posted the colors and Rev. Vernon Edenfield of Little Ogeechee Baptist Church began the ceremony with a prayer.

A special award, The Cross of Military Service, was presented to Joyce Ann Shearouse Tuten for the meritorious service of her father, Wilton Burgman Shearouse.

Adam Bazemore, history teacher from Screven County, presented an interesting talk featuring hardships endured by proud and sacrificing Southerners during the war years.

Rebecca Malcom, escorted by Jack Malcom, placed a magnolia wreath on the Confederate monument in Courthouse Square.

Refreshments followed the ceremony and the event was well-attended and enjoyed by all.
