SPRINGFIELD -- Steve Davis isn't easing into his new job.

The Effingham County Board of Commissioners named Davis county administrator during a special meeting Wednesday. The move came shortly after commissioners and other county leaders discussed preparation for Hurricane Irma, a Category 5 storm that might reach the area in a few days.

"The biggest thing is Mr. Davis comes with a lot of energy and we saw leadership in him," Chairman Wesley Corbitt said just before Davis received unanimous board approval. "We're excited about bringing him onto the team ..."

The board has been seaching for a county administrator since May when it opted not to renew the contract of Toss Allen, who gained the position in 2014.

Davis is eager to get to work despite the looming hurricane.

"Just to let you know, I did bring some jeans and boots," he joked seconds after his hiring.

Davis, a who spent the last 25 years in Henry County, served in the Georgia House of Representatives from 2005-2013 as a Republican. He ran a real estate firm and is knowledgeable about zoning issues.

Corbitt thinks Davis' combination of government and business experience will benefit the county as it tries to get a handle on rapid growth and the issues that come with it, including traffic. Davis served as executive director of the Georgia Concrete Paving Association and knows about building roads and bridges.

"It's a fascinating opportunity and I am excited about it," Davis said.
