South Effingham clinches 2-AAAAA softball title

POSTED: October 4, 2017 9:32 p.m.

GUYTON -- After Wednesday's performance in the best-of-three Region 2-AAAAA softball championship series, it's fair to say Alex Brown has carried her fair share for South Effingham. The freshman delivered multiple key blows in the Mustangs' sweep of Statesboro.

“I’ve been practicing a lot,” Brown said. “I wasn’t expecting to do what I did in the game, but I’m really happy that I did.”

The freshman knocked in six runs with four hits as the Mustangs reeled off 9-4 and 3-1 victories, making Mustangs coach Chuch Smith happy, too.

“She works hard,” he said.  “She has an unbelievable work ethic.”

The Mustangs will host a first-round state playoff series next week against Bainbridge or Veterans, Smith said. Smith has led the Mustangs to region crowns in five of the last nine years.

“It means so much to me,” Brpwn said. “Coming up as a freshman, I was really nervous. I just wanted to carry on the winning tradition.”
