Georgia Salzburger Society to observe Landing Day

POSTED: March 6, 2018 3:43 p.m.

RINCON — A significant event in Effingham County history will be observed at the settlement of New Ebenezer on Saturday.
As has been the case since 1925 when it was formed, the Georgia Salzburger Society will celebrate Landing Day to help keep alive the memory of the first group of Salzburger immigrants who came to America aboard the Purysburg, arriving in Charleston, S.C., before heading to Savannah and then settling in the lost town of Ebenezer.
Saturday’s activities will begin at 11:45 a.m. with a flag-raising ceremony conducted by the Effingham County JROTC Color Guard and cadets.
At noon, a lunch of “Good Rice Soup” will be available before the start of the Landing Program. Rice soup was served to the first transport that arrived in Savannah.
The Landing Day program will start at 2 p.m. It will focus on the lifestyle and economic changes at Ebenezer in the wake of the Revolutionary War.

See the March 7 edition of the Effingham Herald for more details.
