Changes in store at Blue Jay Road-Hwy 17 intersection

POSTED: June 27, 2018 8:13 a.m.

GUYTON -- In order to reduce crashes and improve operations at the intersection of Hwy 17 and Blue Jay Road, the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) will implement some major changes at this intersection over the next few weeks that will ultimately result in the installation of a roundabout.
The first major change will be to convert the current two-way stop to an all-way stop.  This conversion is planned to begin July 9, if weather permits.  The work on Hwy 17 will include the installation of rumble strips, stop signage and painted stop bars.  The work on Blue Jay Road will include the installation of “All Way” plates on the bottom of the existing stop signs.
Leading up to the conversion, the GDOT will install message boards on Monda to notify the public of the upcoming change to an all-way stop. These boards will remain in place for several days after the switch, as motorists adjust to the new operation.
The all-way stop is an interim measure intended to reduce crash severity.
In addition, Georgia Power crews are scheduled to begin the installation of intersection lighting on Wednesday, June 27.  The intersection lighting was made possible through a joint effort of Effingham County and GDOT.
GDOT asks all citizens traveling this area to be alert to changing operational conditions.
