Site selector gets option on part of Treutlen site

POSTED: June 23, 2014 7:05 p.m.

The Effingham Industrial Development Authority has entered into a purchase option with site selector for about 21 acres at the Governor Treutlen site.

IDA members voted Thursday to enter into the option with McCallum Sweeney, which is representing an unknown company.

“It’s an ongoing project,” said IDA Chairman Dennis Webb.

The IDA is working with a site selector, and there is a 30-day extension available at the end of the 60-day option. The purchase price is $50,000 per acre.

The IDA has been marketing the site since a deal with Chinese phosphate firm Xingfa fell through at the end of 2013. The company was going to take the entire 83-acre tract, with about 30 acres going to an American company that was going to co-locate with Xingfa. But the U.S. partner fell through, and Xingfa couldn’t meet its deadline.

Gov. Nathan Deal had announced Xingfa’s coming to Effingham in an August trip to China and the Far East.
