SCMPD offering boater education class prior to new law taking effect

POSTED: June 16, 2014 3:31 p.m.

SAVANNAH — The Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department along with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources will conduct a boating safety course June 21 at the SCMPD training facility located on the second floor of Savannah Mall next to Dillards.

The class will be from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. with a lunch break included.

On July 1, a new mandatory education law goes into effect that will require anyone born after Jan. 1, 1998 who operates a powerboat in the state of Georgia to have successfully completed a Georgia DNR-approved boat education course. The course is free to the public (must be at least 12 years old) and is required of boaters of certain ages to operate certain vessels.

To sign up for the course, call the SCMPD Savannah Mall training center at (912) 921-5450.

For more information on this course, contact the Georgia DNR at (912) 264-7237 or the SCMPD Marine Patrol at (912) 353-1004.

Class size is limited to 30 participants and no one under the age of 12.

The next class will be offered July 19.
