A recent United Nations World Urbanization Prospects Report shows that more than half of the world’s population lives in urban areas. The accompanying infographic shows how the proportions have changed since 1950 and will continue to change by 2050.

According to the Dubai Chronicle, only 13 percent of people lived in cities in 1900, so the report has been coupled with worries about overpopulation, which can also lead to overconsumption and higher crime rates, among other things. Paul Farrell from MarketWatch argues that the issue of overpopulation should even be more of a priority than climate control.

There is definitely enough room to spare on this earth, but the issue comes when the number of desirable places to live shrinks.
