On Oct. 23, 50 students from Chatham, Bryan and Effingham County schools who attended the Aviation Career Day in April at the Mighty 8th Air Force Museum have been selected to receive an educational savings bond.

Every student who attended Aviation Career Day was encouraged to complete an application for the savings bonds and the recipients were chosen at random. The winning students and their parents have been invited to a reception beginning at 5:30 p.m. followed by the ceremony at 6 p.m. in the Lewis E. Lyle Rotunda at the Mighty 8th Air Force Museum in Pooler.

The savings bonds were made possible by the Aviation Career Day platinum sponsors: FlightSafety International, Gulfstream Aerospace, Honeywell and Signature Flight.

Aviation Career Day promoted a variety of careers possible in the field of aviation to over 700 middle and high school students.  Highlights of the event included three maintenance experience events, learning about scholarship opportunities; viewing a Georgia Army National Guard CH-47 Chinook helicopter, a Gulfstream G150 mockup, and more.

Activated in 1942 in Savannah, the 8th Air Force was an important strike element in World War II and remains an active force today.

The Mighty 8th Air Force Museum honors the Mighty 8th ’s proud legacy by preserving the stories of courage, character and patriotism displayed by the men and women of the 8th Air Force from World War II to the present.
