An upcoming 5K race will benefit a local church’s mission trip to Africa this summer.

The Friends and Family 5K for Africa on May 11 will raise money for a group from First Baptist Church of Rincon to travel to Sanyati, Zimbabwe, to help with an ongoing rebuild of the Sanyati Baptist Hospital.

A kids’ one-mile race will be held along with the 5K run. Registration opens at 7 a.m. and the race begins at 8 a.m.

The entry fee for adults is $30 in advance and $35 the day of the race. The cost for children (10 and under) is $20 for the 5K and $15 for the one-mile. Registration is available at www.active.com, Fleet Feet in Savannah, or at the church office at 201 East Sixth Street in Rincon.

Sanyati Baptist Hospital provides medical care to thousands of people who would otherwise have no care at all. As the economy in Zimbabwe collapsed, so did the ability to maintain the Sanyati Hospital.

The hospital deteriorated over time, and Baptist Global Response stepped in to update and renovate the property. In 2011, the first teams went to Zimbabwe to begin the “Rebuild” project.

Following that initial effort, teams from all over the U.S. are going there on a regular basis to help finish this project. The First Baptist of Rincon mission group is one of the teams that will be working there this summer.
