Historic Effingham Society is pleased to announce its fund raiser to benefit the Living History Site.
The Effingham Fall Festival will be held on Sept. 26 at Effingham Museum and Living History Site, 1002 N. Pine St. in Springfield, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. There will be lots of parking available on the adjacent Courthouse Square.
We will be featuring a bake sale, vendors, a doll and quilt show in the Herman and Ruth Gnann House along with the Living History Site. The blacksmith shop, syrup shed, 1790s barn with live animals, Seckinger-Bridgers House, Gnann Summer House, Smoke House and sheds with old equipment and farm demonstrations will be open for your enjoyment. Needlework, chair caning and soap making demonstrations will highlight some of the women’s old time efforts.
There will be local musicians entertaining, including Tommy Hall and his band on the porch. Activities for the children including stilt walking and old time farm chores will be available to delight the young participants.
The Camp Davis Sons of the Confederate Veterans will be encamped with demonstrations of soldiers’ days, drills and canon firings. They plan several Yankee assaults simulating Sherman’s raiders in Georgia throughout the day with Civil War soldiers’ response, protecting the women and children.
And of course, we will have the moonshine still.
Historic Effingham will be selling its famous “Hash and Rice” along with hot dogs and hamburgers. Our gift shop will be open and you may want to do some early holiday shopping. Many will be demonstrating old time crafts and chores.
Come out and support us so that we can expand and complete the site with the proceeds of the day.
A reduced admission will be charged: adults-$3, students-$1 and under age 6 will be admitted free. Vendors who would like to participate or for further information call Effingham Museum at 754-2170 or Secretary Betty Renfro at 826-4705.
Our gift shop has received our Christmas Ornament for 2009, Effingham Academy 1911. It is one of our best and sells for $16. The gift shop will feature the entire series among our many wares.
Our 2010 Calendar “Effingham’s Weddings” will be on sale. This calendar is huge due to the great response we had from all over Effingham. It features wedding photos from 1886 all the way to 1949. Family names represented in this calendar include: Morgan, Arden, Varnell, Arnsdorff, Bragg, Heidt, Lancaster, Kessler, Nease, Zittrouer, Hinely, Seckinger, Zeigler, Zittrauer, Duggar, Conaway, Dasher, Zipperer, Pool, Alsobrook, Myers, Helmly, Reiser, Rahn, Gnann, Shearouse, Exley, Peth, Hall, Berry, Herrington, Williams, Altman, Metzger and Usher. A few accompanying photos are a preview of this calendar. Due to added pages to feature the wonderful wedding photographs, this year’s calendar will cost $6.
Historic Effingham Society will begin selling the calendars on Sept. 20 and you should be able to locate them in local participating businesses and at Effingham Museum from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday through Friday and Sundays from 2-5 p.m., or ask a member about purchasing our calendars or ornaments.
We hope to see you on Sept. 26 and thank you for supporting our Living History Site and Effingham Museum.
