Garden Club honors decoration winners

The Springfield Garden Club has named the winners for the 2009 Springfield Outdoor Christmas Decorations contest.

For over 51 years, the Springfield Garden Club has been sponsoring this contest to encourage Springfield residents to decorate for Christmas. Homes, businesses and civic buildings were judged in 14 categories by judges from other garden clubs.

“We do this to encourage decorating and the spirit of Christmas,” said Betty Waller of the club.

Winning places are as follows: for Overall Traditional, Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Jackson took first with Mr. and Mrs. Tomm Arden in second and Mr. and Mrs. Bill Exley in third. In the Overall Creative Category, the Colemans took first and Darcy was second and Hutchson third.

In Overall Fantasy, Tallick got first and Jane Graham took second with Lee and Hall taking third.

In Overall Christmas Theme, Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Sapp got first place, with Dale Hinely in second, Garralds in third and Craig Fredrick in fourth.

For Children’s Theme, Mr. and Mrs. Kirk Harnage got first and Mr. and Mrs. T. Sheppard took second, with Jimmy Alger in third and Mr. and Mrs. John Conegie in fourth.

In the Religious category, Mr. and Mrs. Keith Johnson took first, Shelgrove took second, Hellman took third, and Mr. and Mrs. Carey Burnsed took fourth. In the Doors category, Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Webster got first, Mr. and Mrs. Terrell Webb took second, Whiten got third, and Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Exley were fourth.

For Windows, Mr. and Mrs. Darrell Banks got first, with Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Nease in second and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hodges in third. In Outdoor Tree and Yard, Cynthia Brogdon took first place and Mr. and Mrs. Max Neidlinger got second place.

Under the Businesses category, B&B Health Services took first, Ever After got second, Hey Beautiful got third and Effingham Hardware took fourth.

For Public Buildings, Effingham Hospital got first, the Effingham Judicial Complex took second and Springfield City Hall got third.

For Porches, Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Webb took first and Jamey Stancell got second. Mr. and Mrs. Don King took the U.S. Patriotism award and JoAnn’s won for Florist.
