NEW YORK A simple act of kindness on a New York City subway train has inspired millions around the world.

Joey Resto, 23, was riding the subway last week when he noticed an elderly homeless man sitting alone in the car, according to ABC News. The man was shirtless and shivering and looked like hed had a rough go.

It was freezing that night, Resto told ABC. He looked cold and hungry.

Thats when Resto walked over to the man, whom other passengers seemed to be avoiding because of a strong odor, and literally offered him the shirt off his back, removing it from his body and helping the man place it over his head.

He looked so weak and frail, Resto told WABC New York. I had to help him, or he would not put it on.

Resto placed his hat on the mans head and invited him to his Brooklyn apartment where he could get him clothes and a hot meal. While the man initially accepted, he fell asleep before Restos stop and Resto said he didnt want to disturb him.

I dont know how anyone could have walked past him and had extra clothing and not given it to him, the native New Yorker said.

While Resto said he felt he was just doing the right thing, millions are praising his actions as extraordinary. Another passenger took cellphone video of the exchange and posted it to Facebook, where its been viewed 13 million times and has hundreds of thousands of likes and shares.

This is what will change our world, wrote one commenter. Have empathy and walk in another mans shoes.

This is the way it should be, wrote another. God bless.

Resto told ABC he hopes others will be inspired to look out for helpless people everywhere and lend a hand where they can.
