When you look at your face in the mirror, there is likely sun damage lurking under the surface that you can’t see.
Artist Thomas Leveritt recently set out to demonstrate the importance of sunscreen by taking videos of people on the street in ultraviolet. Photos and videos captured using ultraviolet technology reveal damage done by the sun that can’t be seen by the naked eye.
In the video, you can see people’s surprise as they are introduced to the unseen freckles of sun damage on their skin. Leveritt then brings sunscreen into the equation and shows how it can create a shield of protection.
His video, “How the Sun Sees You,” was posted on YouTube Tuesday. It was already viewed more than 700,000 times by noon Thursday.
In recent years, researchers have used ultraviolet pictures to find signs of susceptibility to skin cancer.
