Rincon kicks off holiday weekend tonight

The city of Rincon will kick off the Fourth of July weekend festivities with its Star Spangled Spectacular, set for 6-9 p.m. tonight.

The event will be held at the Lowe’s parking lot and will feature attractions for the kids along with a pie-eating contest, potato sack races, a dunk tank, a DJ and craft and food vendors. Among those scheduled for time in the dunk tank are Mayor Ken Lee, Police Chief Mike Bohannon and Council member Scott Morgan.

The annual Rincon 4th of July Parade will begin Saturday morning at 10 a.m. It will start from Macomber Park and will continue to East 4th Street before turning onto Highway 21. The parade will continue to East 9th Street before turning left and proceeding back down Lexington Avenue.

The Rincon Police Department will close Highway 21 at 9:45 a.m. and begin detouring traffic then. Southbound traffic on Highway 21 will be detoured at Middleground Road, and northbound traffic will be detoured at West 17th Street. Northbound tractor-trailers will be detoured at Highway 21 and Fort Howard Road, and southbound tractor-trailers will be detoured at Highway 21 and Middleground Road.

Springfield’s annual fireworks show will take place Saturday night at Effingham County High School. The fireworks will start at dark.
