Maj. David Smith has been selected to serve as the new inspector general for the 165th Airlift Wing of the Georgia Air National Guard.
The inspector general or “IG” serves as the “eyes and ears” of the commander. The IG informs the commander of potential areas of concern as reflected by trends; they function as the fact finder and honest broker in the resolution of complaints; they educate and train commanders and members of the base population on their rights and responsibilities in regard to the Air Force IG system; and they prevent, detect and correct cases of fraud, waste and abuse and mismanagement.
Maj. Smith’s professional education includes both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from Georgia Southern University.
Prior to his selection as the Wing’s inspector general, Smith served as the commander of the 165th Security Force Squadron and most recently served as the Wing’s military equal opportunity officer.
In addition to his responsibilities with the Georgia Air National Guard, Smith is a teacher and administrator in the Effingham County School System. He is currently an assistant principal at South Effingham High School.
