Dr. James Cornwell Jr., has been elected Effingham Health System chief of staff by his colleagues.
Dr. Cornwell, a family medicine physician, most recently served as vice chief of staff under Dr. Christopher Mathews. Dr. Cornwell assumes his new position June 1.
A native Georgian, Dr. Cornwell, 53, joined Effingham Health System in November 2007 to practice family medicine at Effingham Family Medicine in Rincon.
Since joining EHS, Dr. Cornwell has served as medical director of the department of cardiopulmonary care, cardiopulmonary rehabilitation and employee health. He also has volunteered for the ethics, credential and finance committees.
Dr. Cornwell’s track record at EHS makes him uniquely qualified for his new position as chief of the medical staff, EHS Chief Executive Officer Norma Jean Morgan said.
“We are indeed fortunate to have a physician of Dr. Cornwell’s stature and experience in such an important, visible role,” Morgan said. “He has made a tremendous impression on the staff in the span of just five years. I’m confident he will make important contributions in his new position.”
