Georgia-Pacific CEO and President Jim Hannan awarded the Savannah River Mill for more than 1 million work hours without losing any time to an accident. The mill received the CEOs Safety Excellence award.

Georgia-Pacific’s Savannah River Mill recently achieved a significant safety milestone when it celebrated operating more than 1 million work hours without a lost-time accident. In recognition of the achievement, Georgia-Pacific Chief Executive Officer and President Jim Hannan presented employees with the company’s CEO Safety Excellence award at a celebration lunch.

"It’s clear that you are very engaged in demonstrating our shared value for safety in all that you do," Hannan told Savannah River Mill employees during the recent celebration lunch.  "I’m confident that your commitment to safety and effective use of the processes and tools that led to your earning this award will help you continue to keep safety a shared value both at work and at home."

Mill manager Kelly Wolff recognized the hard work and commitment of all SRM employees in achieving this safety milestone at the mill.

"This achievement recognizes our commitment to working safely and to keeping our friends and co-workers from getting hurt," Wolff said. "It recognizes the things that each of us does each and every day to recognize hazards, reduce risk in our workplace and look out for each other. This award is a significant milestone for our team in our safety excellence journey."

Georgia-Pacific’s CEO Safety Excellence Award recognizes the company’s manufacturing facilities that complete 1 million work hours or 24 consecutive months without a lost workday injury while maintaining an OSHA total case incidence rate (TCIR) of 0.5 or less during the award period. This award is part of the company’s disciplined approach to operating facilities in an efficient, safe and environmentally sound manner. Georgia-Pacific, like all Koch companies, has a strong culture of safety and corporate responsibility, and strives for continuous improvement.

In operation since 1986, the Savannah River Mill has more than 1,200 employees and is Effingham County’s largest private employer. The mill’s team members make bath tissue, towel and napkin products people use every day.

Hannan also was recently recognized by the National Safety Council as one of the nine 2012 CEOs Who ‘Get It,’ its annual recognition of business leaders who demonstrate world-class safety. According to the Council, these leaders understand the value of safety and work with employees at all levels to ensure safety remains everyone’s focus and responsibility.

"It was an honor to receive such an award from the National Safety Council recognizing our safety efforts," he said. "This award is about GP employees and the choices they make every day to make safety a shared value at GP. I am proud to be a part of this organization."
