Springfield City Council members have overturned a veto issued by the mayor last week.

Mayor Jeff Northway submitted a veto Oct. 8 on a city council vote of Oct. 6, following an executive session to discuss a personnel issue.

Kenny Usher, appointed acting mayor for Tuesday night’s regular council meeting, presided over the council’s discussion of the veto and the meeting. Northway was not present at the council meeting and neither was Mayor pro tem Max Neidlinger. Northway was at work in Charleston, S.C.

“They have the right to do that,” he said of the council’s overturn of his veto. “That’s what the charter says.”
