Two people are in jail on felony drug charges and cruelty to children charges after Effingham County Sheriff’s deputies conducted a search warrant Friday.

The Drug Suppression Unit has been investigating drug activity in the area of the Brothers Keepers Trailer Park on Burke Drive, which is located near Central Learning Center, for the past several weeks. During the search warrant, deputies located marijuana, several drug related objects and a handgun in the same residence where two small children were living.

Detrica Howard, 37, of Springfield, has been charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, cruelty to children in the second degree, reckless conduct, possession of drugs within 1,000 feet of a school, and possession of tools during the commission of a crime.

Fernecia Roper, 21, of Springfield, was arrested at the residence for outstanding warrants out of Chatham County.

Both Roper and Howard are being held in the Effingham County Jail.

More arrests are expected as this investigation is ongoing.
