Firefighters battle Springfield blaze

Springfield firefighters, with help from several other departments, battled an early morning at a Church Road home Thursday.

Assistant Springfield Fire Chief Travis Zitterour said the initial call came in at 12:06 a.m. and Springfield firefighters fought the blaze for nearly four hours. No one was home at the residence and by the time firefighters arrived, the bedrooms were engulfed and the fire eventually spread into the attic.

“We had to chase it through the roof structure,” he said. “It’s a total loss in those two bedrooms.”

The home’s occupants were out of town at the time of the fire and are receiving assistance from the Red Cross. Rincon Fire Department assisted, while Guyton Fire Department sent a tanker truck and Effingham County Fire and Rescue provided an engine and an air trailer.
