Guyton’s police and other employees will be able to talk to each other and everybody else more clearly after the city council approved a new cell phone plan.
Guyton is dropping Southern Linc’s service for Verizon. Even though the Verizon plan is more expensive, the service is better, according to Alderman Les Pevey.
“Moving our phone service does pain me because I work for Southern Linc,” he said. “But the service isn’t adequate. We don’t have a tower locally and we don’t have one coming anytime soon. It doesn’t do much good if we can’t use the service.”
For six phones, Verizon charges $316 a month while Southern Linc charges $170 a month.
“I think it would be important to have a phone and to have it for emergency communications,” Pevey said. “I just don’t see any other way. The Lincs aren’t any good to us if we can’t use them.”
Said Alderman Phillip King: “I live a mile and half from (city hall) and I can’t call here on my Linc.”
The fire department will stay with Southern Linc radios.
Pevey said the fines and revenues have gone up so the city may be able to absorb the extra cost.
The plan would not cost the city extra for phones and for such things as chargers and clips.
