SAVANNAH — An Effingham County man died Wednesday morning after he lost control of his motorcycle and crashed at the intersection of Interstates 516 and 16.

James Ernest Banks, 31, of Guyton died at Memorial Health University Medical Center following the 7:32 a.m. crash, investigators said.

According to the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department, Banks was riding a blue and silver 2003 Suzuki motorcycle northbound on I-516. He lost control of the bike on a curve after turning onto the off ramp to the entrance of I-16.

The motorcycle hit the guardrail on the north side of the off ramp, according to the SCMPD.

Banks was found down the embankment and the motorcycle came to rest on the south side of the off ramp.

“It was a pretty violent crash,” said Julian Miller, public affairs administrator for the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

Officers from the SCMPD’s Major Accident Investigation Team continue to investigate the wreck.
