Mayor, council due in court Wednesday

Springfield City Council members seeking Mayor Jeff Northway’s ouster and the mayor are scheduled to be in court Wednesday morning before Judge William Woodrum Jr.

The five council members who asked for Northway’s resignation in November filed a response Friday to Northway’s motion to dismiss their petition to Effingham County Superior Court to have him removed from office.

The council members — Troy Allen, Jeff Ambrose, Charles Hinely, Butch Kieffer and Kenny Usher — said they are seeking the mayor’s removal under Section 45 of the city charter. They allege the mayor is “guilty of malpractice in office, willful neglect of duty, gross and willful abuse of powers entrusted to them or otherwise unfit to fulfill the office of mayor.”
