A fundraising drive for the American Red Cross got off to a fast start in Effingham County on Thursday when the First Effingham Bank presented the organization with a check for $1,000.
Last year, the Red Cross provided services to 1,895 people in Effingham County. Many of them were the victims of house fires, according to Tina Hardy, director of public support for the Savannah Chapter.
Campaign chairwoman Carolyn Sanders of First Effingham Bank said all money raised in Effingham County will stay in the county.
Other Red Cross programs include services for the military and military families and training in such lifesaving skills as CPR and first aid.
The Red Cross will be conducting “Red Cross Sunday” on May 6, when donation envelopes will be distributed to churches and church members will be asked to donate $1 each. Churches in need of envelopes may contact the First Effingham Bank in Rincon at 826-5800.
