A teenage girl died and three other people were injured in a crash on Interstate 16 Thursday afternoon.

According to the Effingham County Sheriff's Office, the driver of a white sedan swerved to avoid rear-ending a vehicle that slowed down near the Old River Road exit. The car went off the road and crashed into a tree, said ECSO spokesman Detective David Ehsanipoor.

Kaylah Hawkins, 13, of Macon was pronounced dead on the scene.

Her brother, Jacob McCullough, 22, of Macon, was the driver. He and two additional passengers were taken to a Savannah hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening.

The crash remains under investigation by the Georgia State Patrol.
