The South Effingham Middle School Lady Mustangs went on the road and downed Screven County 10-3 last week.
Rami Mesmer struck out six and catcher Ansley Brown threw out of four of five would-be base stealers. Alexis Studier went 2-for-2 and stole three bases for SEMS, while Summer Lewis had two steals and scored three runs.
Taylor Ross was 3-for-4 with a double and drove in a run, and Naomi Sapp was 2-for-4 with a double and one RBI. Dani Heald was 1-for-3 with a double, Loren Moss was 1-for-3 and added to the RBI total, along with Brooke Brabham.
The win over Screven County followed SEMS’ tournament championship in Hazlehurst. The Lady Mustangs went undefeated in the tournament besting Bacon County 10-4, Long County 11-0, and West Laurens 10-4 before the skies opened up, ending the tournament before the championship series could be played. Mesmer was in the circle for the Bacon County victory, with Olivia Laverenz getting the Long County and West Laurens wins.
In a 12-1 win over Southeast Bulloch, Lewis was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, Autumn Conaway was 2-for-4 and drove in a run, Brown and Laverenz each had one RBI while Makenzie Kessler was 1-for-1 and Sydney Wilson went 1-for-2. Laverenz and Mesmer combined for the win, striking out 10 and allowing four hits.
The Lady Mustangs pounded out 11 hits in a 9-1 win over Effingham County Middle. Ross was 4-for-4, driving in a run, and Laverenz was 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Moss drove in two runs and went 1-for-4, Naomi Sapp was 1-for-4 with one RBI, Heald was 1-for-2 with one RBI and Brown went 1-for-2.
Mesmer and Laverenz teamed for five strikeouts and gave up three hits.
