WaCo rolls past Mustangs in tourney

The Washington County Golden Hawks jumped out to a 15-5 lead and never looked back, handing the South Effingham Mustangs a 63-34 loss Monday night in the first round of the Region 3-AAA boys basketball tournament.

Cory Lester led four Golden Hawks in double figures with 13 points. Arzavier Renfroe had 11 points, and Jaren Harris and Elhanan Bone, a 6-foot-8 center, each had 10 points.

The Golden Hawks led 36-15 at the half and took a  48-26 cushion into the final quarter.

Jaron Mullins topped the Mustangs (7-18) with 12 points. Eddie Harris added six points, Alex Reid had five, Ian Byrd scored three, Steven Williams and Zach Anderson each had two points and Justin Hatten had one point.

Washington County (20-6) advanced to meet Hephzibah in the late game Wednesday.
