BRUNSWICK —  The Brunswick Pirates bit off a Region 2-AAAAAA victory in big chunks Friday night.

The Pirates (4-4, 1-1) averaged more than nine yards per play in a 41-6 rout of Effingham County at Glynn County Stadium. Brunswick racked up 515 total yards on 57 plays.

The Rebels (2-6, 0-2) kept the Pirates out of the end zone on the first series of the game. After that stand, however, Brunswick advanced across the goal line four straight times en route to a 27-6 halftime advantage.

The Pirates’ first four scoring drives covered 66, 42, 74 and 61 yards. The initial one featured nine plays, including a 28-yard run by Chuckobe Hill that helped set up Ree Simmons’ four-yard scoring jaunt.

Hill and Simmons tallied touchdown runs of eight and six yards in the second quarter, respectively, before Effingham County finally broke through with 1:33 left before halftime. The Rebels got their first touchdown on a nine-yard pass from Zach Garcia to a Isaiah Bell that capped a 12-play, 74-yard march.

Brunswick quelled Effingham County’s momentum by answering the Rebels’ score less than one minute later. It came on a 50-yard pass from Anthony Mountain to Tyrease Jones.

The Pirates maintained their scoring pace in the second half as they scored on each of their third-quarter possessions. They got a 64-yard touchdown grab from Simmons and a nine-yard run from Hill.

Effingham County mounted a 14-play, 61-yard drive in the third quarter but it ended with a missed field goal from 30 yards.

The fourth quarter was played with a running clock. The Rebels scored with 2:41 left on a 15-yard pass from Garcia to D’Andre Johnson.

The Rebels are off this week and will return to action Nov. 1 at home against Glynn Academy.
