Mustangs finish second in Class AAAAAA

South Effingham’s boys cross country team galloped to its best finish in the state meet in school history Friday.

Led by Tyler Phillips, the Mustangs, the Mustangs (117 points) grabbed second place in Class AAAAAA, finishing on the heels of Cambridge (108). Phillips crossed the line fourth overall by completing the course in 16:51.47. Cailin Howard finished fifth at 16:54.65,

South Effingham’s entired team fared well, including Jacob Mitchell (20th), Joey Burdick (37th) and Julian Howard (59th). Chase Garratt and Zane Bell are also members of the squad.

In the girls competition, South Effingham placed 27th. Participants included Madison Lockhart, Mia Fitzpatrick, Lily McDonald, Katelyn Morris, Caroline Motes, Brooke Edwards and Makayka Stockes.

Effingham County’s Candace Kieffer finished 11th overall at 20:43.81.
