South snatches region crown from Richmond Hill

RICHMOND HILL -- The South Effingham Mustangs captured their first Region 2-AAAAAA baseball title since 2007 with a nailbiting 1-0 victory over host Richmond Hill on Friday night.

The Mustangs (22-8, 13-5 Region 2-AAAAAA) advanced to the Class AAAAAA state tournament as a No. 1 seed and will meet Heritage of Conyers in a best-of-three first-round series in Guyton starting with a doubleheader Thursday.

Sophomore Kaleb Johnson pitched a complete-game four-hitter in the decisive game against Richmond Hill. Johnson struck out eight and walked four. He pitched out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the fourth inning.
