Cornell’s Darius Scott, a 2018 South Effingham High School graduate, has qualified for the first round of the NCAA Track & Field Championships in Jacksonville, Fla.

Scott earned his berth Saturday with a triple jump of 50-feet, 10 3/4 inches in the 2019 Pomona-Pitzer Invitational in Claremont, Calif. The leap was a personal best.

Earlier this season, Scott broke Muhammad Halim’s Cornell indoor freshman triple jump record in the 2019 Ivy League Heptagonal Indoor Track and Field Championships in Cambridge, Mass.

Scott sailed 50 feet, three inches to earn his first collegiate championship medal. The leap was a personal record that placed Scott sixth in the Ivy League.

Halim, a former Olympian, set the previous indoor mark for freshmen in 2005. It was 52 feet, 2 1/2 inches.
