GUYTON -- It was the South Effingham Lady Mustangs who rose like a Phoenix.

The Lady Mustangs kept their season alive by snapping a nine-game skid in a Region 2-AAAAA tournament play-in game Monday night.. They pummeled the New Hampstead Lady Phoenix 65-49.

Maleece Newbill led the way for South Effingham (13-14) with 19 points. Mallori Jenkins (14), Jillian Pelote (10) and Destinee Owens (10) also scored in double figures for South Effingham.

In the 2-AAAAA boys play-in game at South Effingham, the Mustangs (1-25) fell to the Ware County Gators 71-63. It was South Effingham's 20th straight defeat.

Tyrese Everett led the Mustangs with 15 points. Taylor Warren and Chase Warren added 13 and 12, respectively.
