Effingham County avenged its early season loss to Wayne County with an 8-0 win in Jesup on Thursday.
Shelby Duff was nearly unhittable from the circle, allowing only two hits in a complete game win. Duff struck out 10 Lady Yellow Jacket batters and walked none.
She also had a fine day at the plate, going 2-for-4 and scoring two runs.
In all, six Lady Rebels recorded hits. Kayla Calhoun, Marie Fogle, Whitney Smith and Tabitha Douberly each had two hits, while Mackenzi Golden doubled to left field in the seventh inning.
The win puts Effingham at 6-1 in Region 3-AAAA South. The Lady Rebels have the opportunity to capture their sixth consecutive regular season subregion championship on Thursday in Brunswick. Effingham plays the Lady Pirates at 6:30 p.m.
The region tournament, featuring the state’s No. 2 team Greenbrier, starts Oct. 6 at the North Glynn Complex in Brunswick.
To prepare for the competitive region tournament and to gain more game experience, Effingham competed in the Coca-Cola Classic Softball Tournament at Patriot Park in Grovetown.
The Lady Rebels went 5-1 in the tourney, including a thrilling 2-1 win over Oconee County, the second ranked team in Class AAA.
In the win, Tabitha Douberly hit a two-out single in the bottom of the seventh, scoring Emma Exley.
Effingham travels to Paulson Softball Complex in Savannah today for a 4:30 p.m. game against Calvary Day School.
