Line Drive rallies to take USSSA state championship
Team with several Effingham players battles way out of losers bracket, tops East Cobb in finals

The Line Drive claimed the USSSA 11 and under AAA Division state championship in Monroe, beating the East Cobb Yankees twice in the championship round.

Chipper Wiley hit a solo homer, and Brennan Jamar and DJ Kirkland also drove in a run each while Brian Eichhorn pitched the final four innings of an 8-7 win in the finale. The Line Drive won the first game of the championship series 15-7. Jamar drove in three runs and pitched five innings, Matt Korzik had three RBIs, Grayson Cowan had two RBIs and Wiley and Dalton Griffin each drove in a run.

The Line Drive lost the opener in the tournament, falling 10-8 to the Georgia Select Bulldogs. Kirkland hit a two-run homer, Jamar knocked in two runs and Cowan had one RBI.

The Line Drive bounced back with a 6-5 win over the Sawnee Mountain Thunder, as Eichhorn went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Kirkland, Jamar and Wiley each knocked in a run.

Wiley drove in three runs and Kirkland knocked in a run as the Line Drive beat the Georgia Select Bulldogs 7-3.

The Line Drive also got a visit from University of Georgia third baseman Colby May, the former South Effingham High School star, who spoke to the boys and signed autographs.

May’s visit was arranged by coach Tommy Gibbs.
