Local gymnasts turn in top finishes at nationals

One Effingham County gymnast advanced to the national finals, one took first place in her division and another earned a top-10 finish in her division at the 2012 YMCA National Gymnastics Championships in Milwaukee.


Callie Kanoy, Jill Conway and Anna Whiddon of Effingham County competed for the Islands YMCA gymnastics team in the three-day event.


Whiddon took first place in level 3 with a 9.85 on the vault, 9.6 on uneven bars, 9.6 on balance beam and 9.675 on floor exercise for an all-around total of 38.725.


Conway competed in her first level 8 meet and scored an 8.35 on vault, 8.3 on bars, 9.7 on beam and 8.575 on floor for an all-around score of 34.925. She made the top 25 and qualified for the finals, where she took third place on beam and 12th place all-around with a score of 69.8.


Kanoy finished in 10th place in level 5 with an 8.3 on vault, 8.5 on bars, 8.75 on beam and 9.0 on floor for an overall score of 34.55.


The Effingham County gymnasts are coached by Island YMCA gymnastics director Carol Tanrath and YMCA head coach Amanda Turner.
