With colleges all over the country starting two-a-days, the Effingham Herald has decided to inform its readers of the local athletes playing college football.

Lynon Jefferson: Georgia Southern, ECHS c/o 2003 WR (5-9, 177) Sr.., majoring in graphic design.
Jefferson is looking to recover from a shoulder injury that sidelined him all of 2006 and make the move from running back to wide receiver. He did not participate in the spring Blue-White game.

For his career, Jefferson has played in 24 games. He has rushed for 649 yards and two touchdowns on 71 attempts, averaging 9.1 yards a carry. He has caught 12 passes for 226 yards and a touchdown.

Jefferson’s first college touchdown came in 2004 off a 22-yard pass from former ECHS teammate Trey Hunter in Sanford Stadium against the Georgia Bulldogs.

The Eagles kick off the season at 2 p.m. on Sept. 8 against West Georgia. Georgia Southern is looking to rebound from a disappointing 3-8 season.

Patrick Bolen: Georgia Southern, SEHS c/o 2004 PK (5-10, 185) Jr., majoring in health and physical education

Bolen is in competition for the starting place kicker position. He made a 22-yard field goal and an extra-point for the White team in its 17-7 win over the Blue team in the annual spring game.

For his career, he has appeared in 11 games, made 13 of 14 extra point attempts and has made six of 11 field goal attempts for 31 points. His longest field goal is 39 yards, which he kicked against Elon in 2006.

Last season, his first extra-point attempt was blocked at Western Carolina. However, he made his next 11 attempts.  

Seth Goldwire: Wofford (Spartanburg, S.C.), ECHS c/o 2005 LB (5-11, 220) Jr.., majoring in economics

Goldwire is the Terriers’ top returning tackler from 2006 with 74 tackles. He is projected to start at inside linebacker for a squad that finished 7-4 last season.

Goldwire started all 11 games for the Terriers last year and was 10th in the Southern Conference in tackles. He made six tackles behind the line of scrimmage and sacked the quarterback three times.

In 2005, Goldwire played in five games as a true freshman and was instrumental on special teams.

The Terriers kick off the season Sept. 1 against Georgetown. They host GSU on Nov. 3. The closest game to Effingham is at the Citadel in Charleston, S.C., on Oct. 6.
    
Ray Webb: The Citadel (Charleston, S.C.), ECHS c/o 2005 LS (5-10, 195) So., majoring in biology

Webb has yet to see action for the Bulldogs as its long snapper. They kick off the season Sept. 1 against Charleston Southern. The Citadel travels to GSU on Oct. 27.

The Citadel finished 5-6 last year.

Asa Wright: North Greenville University (Tigerville, S.C.), SEHS c/o 2007, DT (6-1, 300) majoring in sport management.

The Crusaders kick off the season Sept. 1 against the University of Virginia-Wise at 7 p.m. The closest game to Effingham is Sept. 22 in Kingsland against Edward Waters.

The Crusaders went 10-2 last season, winning the Victory Bowl. NGU is an independent in NCAA Division II.
 
Nicheon Hayes: North Greenville University, ECHS c/o 2007 DB (6-0, 185) majoring in math.

TJ Washington: Rainy River Community College (International Falls, Minn.) SEHS c/o 2007 FS (6-2, 175)

The Voyaguers compete in the NJCAA and the Minnesota Community College Conference.

Vince Munch: Ferrum College (Ferrum, Va.) ECHS c/o 2007 OL

The Panthers kick off the season Sept. 1 against Emory and Henry College.
Ferrum competes in the USA South Atlantic Conference in NCAA Division III.
