SEMS softball off to a 4-0 start

The South Effingham Middle School Lady Mustangs softball team improved to 4-0 in region play after beating Screven County 19-8 in five innings on Tuesday.

Mariah Freeman was the winning pitcher as she, Cate Anderson, Kaity White, Reagan Deal, Hannah Schurman and Naomi Sapp each had one hit.

The Lady Mustangs opened the season with a 17-0 victory over Southeast Bulloch as Sapp, Anderson, Freeman, Deal and Rami Mesmer each had one hit.

Freeman threw six shutout innings to lead the Lady Mustangs to a 3-2 win over Richmond Hill, and Schurman secured the win with a game-saving catch in the bottom of the seventh inning. Anderson, White and Mallory Ferguson led the offense.

In their home opener, the Lady Mustangs downed Effingham Middle 12-2 in five innings as Freeman and Katie Kussow combined on a one-hitter. Anderson led a 17-hit attack, going 4-for-4 with a homer. Ferguson was 3-for-4 and Kussow, Freeman and Hannah Arrington each had two hits. White, Deal, Schurman and Alexis Studier each had one hit.

Other members of the Lady Mustangs include:  Brooke Strickland, Olivia Laverenz, Amy Jameson, Ansley Brown, Taylor Ross, Kendall Winge and Stephanie Hallowell.
