The South Effingham Middle School track and field team concluded its 2007-08 season April 14 with an end of the year banquet. Nearly 50 student-athletes were recognized for their participation this season.
Girls recognized for placement in the regional meet were Emily Humphries in the long jump and Grace Owen in the 100 meter hurdles.
Boys recognized for placement in the regional meet were James Coon in the 3,200-meter run and Josh Mercer in the 100 meter dash, 200 dash and long jump. Jamarea Mack, Ben Sikes, Kyle Lankhorst and Josh Mercer also placed in the boys 4x100 relay.
In addition to regional recognition, awards were presented to the top student-athletes in a variety of categories. Danielle Hightower and Zack Pilz received the academic awards. Tianna Germaine and Josh Mercer received the most outstanding sprinter awards.
Addie Blackstock and James Coon received the most outstanding distance awards. Caroline Rietkovich and Kyle Lankhorst received the most outstanding field event awards. Grace Owen and Jack Calvert received the coach’s awards.
“This is an individual and team sport,” coach Jeff Faith said. “It takes 100 percent of what you’ve got, and that is what these student-athletes gave us.”
