Reliever Jason Shiell of Rincon was designated for assignment Sunday by the Kansas City Royals.

Shiell’s stint in the majors was short, considering the Royals promoted him from Triple-A Omaha on Thursday.

However, Shiell may not have to go back to the minor leagues. He is on the waiver wire until Wednesday. Another team may claim him or he may choose to become an unrestricted free agent.

Shiell was designated for assignment to call up right-handed pitcher Leo Nunez to start against the Texas Rangers on Sunday.

Nunez pitched six shutout innings in a 10-0 win Sunday.

At Omaha, Shiell is 1-4 with  a 4.70 ERA, but vastly improved in July. He posted a 2.45 ERA and has allowed only one run in his last nine innings pitched.
